What Is Born When I Die represents the final stage in the internal healing process that structures the "Romanticism" collection: definitive transformation. After confrontation, control, and integration, the journey culminates in a symbolic death. It is not destruction, but transcendence.
In this work, the conflict is no longer external nor walking beside the subject. It has been absorbed, processed, understood. What takes place now is deeper: the former version of the self must cease to exist so that a renewed form can emerge. The man’s body, lying open, does not express violence but surrender. The opening in his chest is not a wound; it is a threshold.
The bird rising from within him symbolizes the reconfiguration of identity. It does not emerge from the surface, but from the deepest interior. It represents the self rebuilt through the previous stages — a clearer awareness, a refined strength, a balance no longer dependent on constant struggle. The man does not die physically; what dies is the version shaped by fear, reaction, and resistance.
Here, strength is no longer demonstrated through tension or defiance. It manifests in the capacity to surrender to transformation. The serenity in his expression signals full acceptance of the process. The symbolic death becomes an intentional act: releasing what no longer serves in order to allow what is essential to take form.
This fourth piece closes the emotional arc initiated in The Roar of Destiny. The darkness was confronted, regulated, and integrated. What remains is evolution.
What Is Born When I Die affirms that healing is not the elimination of pain, but the passage through it until something new is born from within.
